It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our dearly loved John from his brave battle with cancer. He battled his illness with strength and determination.

John passed away peacefully on December 28, 2021, at Burnaby Hospital at the age of 71.

John was born and raised In Vancouver, BC to Emily and David Stewart. John was predeceased by his mother Emily, father David, brothers Neil (Monika), and Doug (Gloria). Survived by his wife Verna, sons Chad (Carrie) and Todd, granddaughter Emily, sister-in-law's Vonda (Gerry), Cheryl (Gordy), Arlene (Garth), Monika, Gloria, and many nieces and nephews.

John married Verna the love of his life on June 3, 1972, and together they raised two sons in their Burnaby home

During his younger years, John was a talented athlete who participated in many sports, soccer being his favourite. In later years golf became his sport of choice. John was a coach and avid supporter of both sons in their sports endeavors.

John joined the Burnaby Fire Department on August 28, 1972. He was active in the Burnaby Firefighter Union Local 323 for many years serving as Union Secretary for 14 years. After rising through the ranks (Staff Officer, Deputy Chief) John was promoted to Fire Chief in July 1999 and retired in August 2007 after providing outstanding leadership for the department.

After his retirement, John became very much involved in the PALS Autism Society. He was a mentor and strong advocate for children with autism. He was a Director at PALS Autism Society School and was instrumental in the Society obtaining its forever home in New Westminster in 2017.

In John's retirement years he and Verna spent the summer golfing or at the family cabin on Mayne Island. Winter was spent in Arizona enjoying the warm weather, new friends, and golf.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the Staff of the Palliative Care Unit 2D for their care and kindness through this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers donation to PALS Autism Society or Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society (SEE LINK AT BEGINNING OF ARTICLE) would be greatly appreciated.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

John's greatest achievement was being the best husband, father and grandpa.

We will miss you!
